Local SEO for small businesses - a step-by-step guide

Seven concrete steps so people in your city can find you - from Google Business Profile to reviews, without the jargon.

Local SEO for small businesses - a step-by-step guide

When someone in your city googles "[your service] + [your city]", does your business show up on page one? For most local firms - service businesses, clinics, shops, restaurants - that question directly decides whether the phone rings.

Local SEO isn't a shortened version of "regular" SEO. It's a specific set of rules aimed at one goal: getting found by people who are physically nearby and ready to visit or call. Here's exactly what that means in practice.

1. Google Business Profile - the foundation

If you haven't created or claimed your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), this is the first step, not the last. Fill in every field you can: business category, hours, exact address, phone, photos of the space and products/services. A 90% complete profile does not rank like a 40% complete one - Google rewards completeness.

2. NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone)

Your business name, address, and phone must be written identically everywhere - on the site, Google profile, Facebook page, and online directories. "12 King Peter St" and "King Peter 12" look the same to a person, but Google may treat them as different locations, which weakens trust in your profile.

3. Local keywords on the site

Saying "custom furniture" isn't enough - you need "custom furniture Novi Sad" in headings and body copy, naturally, not stuffed. If you serve multiple locations or cities, each deserves its own page with local context - not one generic contact page for everything.

4. Reviews - quantity and quality

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors and the best trust signal for someone deciding whether to contact you. Ask for reviews actively (a short message after the job is done), and reply to every one - positive and negative - quickly and professionally. A profile with no replies looks abandoned, even with good ratings.

5. Local citations

Your business should appear on relevant online directories and platforms - not mass-submitted at random, but on ones that actually matter for your industry and location. Every consistent NAP mention builds the trust Google recognizes.

6. Mobile optimization and load speed

"[service] + [city]" searches mostly happen on phones, often while someone is on the move and needs a solution now. A slow or poorly mobile site loses that visitor before they even see what you offer - no matter how well you ranked.

7. Tracking results

Local SEO isn't "set and forget". Track rankings for key phrases, calls and direction clicks from your Google profile, and adjust based on data - not assumptions.

Realistic expectations

Local SEO builds visibility that lasts - but not overnight. First changes usually show within a few weeks, while more stable positioning takes consistent work over several months. Anyone promising you the #1 spot "in a week" either doesn't understand how Google works or isn't telling you the whole truth.
